SRI International, a non-profit research and development firm, has created a robot named the Taurus that can defuse bombs with precision when attached to a larger robot. The remote-controlled Taurus has had so much success that scientists now believe it could have a whole other use as an elderly caregiver.

While the robot certainly wouldn’t compensate for a real-life caregiver, scientists are confident that the extra sets of eyes, hands and ears could increase a senior’s autonomy by as much as a few years. The robot could hypothetically maneuver around the house, watch over an elderly person and even perform menial tasks.

It could do this, scientists explain, because the Taurus’ exact motions can easily be controlled by a loved one or even a surveillance company. If a stove was left on, an individual could command the robot to approach the stove and turn the dial to the “Off” position. These same sets of principals would also allow the Taurus to program a microwave or set a coffee pot.

SRI believes the Taurus could be available in this capacity soon, and will cost between $30,000 and $40,000 a unit.

The Nook Color has figured out who its top fans are: women who read women’s magazines. According to sales figures for both the Nook Color and e-magazines, it appears that consumers who enjoy reading magazines like Cosmopolitan, US Weekly, Women’s Health and Every Day with Rachael Ray, are the top Nook purchasers.

This news is only somewhat predictable. As many people assumed, relatively reasonably priced, easy-to-operate e-readers like the Nook are very popular with females. Whereas high-tech, multi-functional “cool” gadgets like the iPad 2 are more popular with men. These predictions are backed by data from Forrester Research, which shows that 55 percent of e-reader owners are women, while 56 percent of tablet owners are men.

The New York Times points out that Barnes & Noble is specifically marketing the Nook Color to females, as many of the company’s ads feature women lounging around and reading. Even the device’s guided tour, which can be found on the Barnes & Noble website, is led by a woman.

Seniors, what do you think? Are women more likely to buy e-readers while men seek out tablets? Or is this all a bunch of malarkey?

HP Deskjet 1000 inexpensive easy-to-use printer for Boomers

Senior Friendly Features: Easy to Use: ★★★★★, Easy to Set Up: ★★★★★ Ink Use: ★★★★★  Size ★★★★★ Print Quality ★★★★½ Price ★★★★★

HP’s Deskjet 1000 printer may be one of the best values on the market.

I recently had a good photo-quality deskjet printer print its last page and go off to its quiet resting place. It was a good printer. Those full-size printers can be pricey, and before I spent time researching and buying my next big printer, I wanted a printer pro tem that would just handle paperwork. Nothing too fancy, just something to hold me over. Even as a photographer, most of the printing I do is paperwork, like letters, invoices, envelopes, etc.

I saw this printer for less than 30 bucks, including ink cartridges, and a few good reviews and thought I’d have nothing to lose in trying it. That turned out to be a really good thing.

Brought it home, opened the box, and followed the simple instructions to insert the two ink cartridges, plug in the power and USB cable (the other end hooked into my MacBook Pro), and inserted the CD with drivers and info. A couple of clicks later, I was ready to print. Running a test print from an email, it worked like a charm. Web pages print well, too.

I printed a photo, not at the photo setting but just at the “Plain Paper – Best” setting, on plain paper and it looks really good. If you get photos of your kids or grandkids and love printing them out, this is going to give you a lot of good prints.

The inks that come with most printers aren’t completely full, but in several weeks of use mine are still going strong. A check via the computer shows that I haven’t really dented them, even the black that I use most for paperwork. Replacement cartridges are $13-18 each for the regular size, and around $28-29 each for the XL versions with double the ink for heavy print needs. The former cost as much as the printer, but they may last longer. No complaints on the amount of ink used.

Overall, a solid printer with good quality printing, low ink use/costs. It’s not an all-in-one, so if you need scanning and faxing capabilities, you will want to look for one of those. This prints a maximum sheet size of 8.5×11. It’s small, light, and even comes with a handy carrying bag if you ever need to take it with you. It’s now down to less than $25 on Amazon.

  • Print high-quality black-and-white and color documents with the HP Deskjet 1000 Printer
  • Designed to fit your budget, this easy-to-use inkjet printer delivers maximum print speeds of 16 pages per minute black and 12 ppm color
  • Get great print quality with HP original ink, and optional high-capacity HP ink cartridges offer a solid value with frequent printing
  • You’ll be printing before you know it with this efficient printer’s quick and easy installation
  • The HP Deskjet 1000 Printer features straightforward controls, a 60-sheet input tray and a 25-sheet output tray
  • Affordable
  • Compact

It seems Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook are locked in a hot competition. Just a day after Barnes & Noble introduced its “simplified” e-reader with new touchscreen technology, Amazon has announced that it will now offer the Kindle 3G with special offers for only $164.

The new Nook with Wifi and 3G is going for $170. This has allowed Amazon to declare that it now offers the lowest-priced 3G e-reader. Amazon’s original Kindle with special offers premiered last month for $114 and quickly became the company’s best-selling model.

    And the e-reader war continues…

    Panasonic_Lumix_DMC_TS3_Waterproof Orange for Seniors

Senior Friendly Features: Easy to Use: ★★★★½, Features: ★★★★★ Picture Quality ★★★½☆  Size ★★★★★ Battery Life ★★★★☆ Price ★★★½☆

Are you tough on cameras? Or do you like snorkeling with your camera? If you answered yes to either of those questions, the new Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TS3 is worth a serious look.

It’s a rugged camera, withstanding drops of up to 2 meters (military spec), freezing temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit), and can be used underwater up to 40 feet deep. The lens itself has its own internal shock-resistance to further protect it in drops. And you want to protect a precision lens designed by Leica. It’s a 28mm wide angle, with a 4.6x optical zoom. That wide end of the lens is great for photographing large groups or dealing with refraction underwater.

A 12.1 megapixel CCD sensor means you can make big prints of your photos. It shoots full 1080p HD video as well. The camera plays well with Panasonic VIERA TVs, either reading the SD/SDHC/SDXC card directly or connecting via HDMI micro cable to the camera itself. The VIERA remote will help you do the rest.

Built-in GPS will geotag your images so you know exactly where they were shot, and the GPS feature will also automatically set the clock to local time, so if you travel you won’t have to worry about the time being right. It has intelligent auto settings, optical image stabilization, and a built-in 3D mode to create 3D images anywhere, any time. The caveat here is that you’re limited to 2 megapixel images.

The back of the camera has a 2.3 inch LCD on the back. That sounds like a small LCD, but it takes up enough of the back to give you a good idea of how small the camera actually is.

It’s (un)official. Apple’s App Store has surpassed the half-million mark when it comes to approved apps, according to start-up companies Chillingo, 148apps and Chomp. While the infographic below offers all the juicy stats and details, we’ll just say that Apple has about 200,000 more apps than its nearest competitor, the Android Market.

Spectrum Online recently ran a story about the Sacramento Public Library and its enthusiastic patrons, many of which are seniors. Now these seniors aren’t up in arms about the library’s newest paperback or extended hours.

Instead, they’re interested in trading those bulky published books for lightweight e-readers, and one librarian has offered to show them how to use these devices. Megan Wong, one of the Sacramento library’s tech librarians, has created an appointment schedule for Wednesdays during which seniors can bring in their e-readers and she will show them how to use them and how to download library e-books onto them.

The story notes that e-readers have become popular with seniors because they are “very easy to use,” “compact” and “easy on the eyesight,” among other reasons. Wong noted that e-readers were ideal for seniors because the devices are much easier to hold than traditional books, and can store thousands of titles.

Apple Stores have been rebranded Apple 2.0 Stores

Fresh off its 10-year anniversary, Apple has debuted its made-over Apple Stores, dubbed “Apple Store 2.0.” As was predicted, the stores’ paper signs that used to reside next to its gadgets have been replaced with iPad 2 kiosks.

These kiosks provide information on products and shows side-by-side comparisons of gadgets, carriers and data plans. The iPads also let you summon assistance from a sales associate. So far, it’s taken most associates less than five minutes to respond to these requests.

The new Apple Store app has also received a makeover. It has enhanced the in-store mode, which lets you locate a specialist at an Apple Store or book an appointment through Genius Bar. You can also custom-order a new Mac through the app.

Kobo’s newest e-reader has a touchscreen, a feature that has mostly eluded e-readers until now. While it’s a popular feature among the tablet and smartphone crowd, e-readers haven’t really embraced the touchscreen yet. Sony’s has been the only mainstream competitor so far to include touchscreen technology in an e-reader.

The touchscreen Kobo e-reader will sell for $129, and is available for pre-order at Borders.com. Note that while the e-reader is sold through Borders.com, Kobo is a separate company and is therefore not impacted by Borders’ recent bankruptcy filing.

This isn’t the only news out of the Kobo camp today, however. The company has also announced that it will drop the price of its original Wi-fi model to $99, making it one of the most affordable e-readers on the market.

The price reduction may be a very smart move for Kobo. Amazon’s newest Kindle is now its most popular thanks to the $25 price cut that accompanied the ads, sponsored screensavers and special offers that appear on the device. The ad-enabled Kindle sells for $114.

Motorola Droid X2 Android Smartphone for Boomers

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD Screen: ★★★★★ Lightweight: ★★★☆☆ Sound Quality: ★★★★½ Easy to Feel Controls: ★★★½☆ Easy to See Controls: ★★★★★ Simplicity: ★★★★☆ Durable Design ★★★★★

Motorola’s sequel to it’s great Droid X, called the Droid X2, comes out this week. It looks and feels just like the original, but there are some significant changes under the hood. An NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor means that you now have two processors to make everything F-A-S-T. Even better is that the display size is huge and now even easier to read at the qHD (one-quarter HD) resolution of 960×450. The little raised part on the top of the back, where the camera and LED light are built-in, is the same. Makes it a little easier to hold on to.

The 8 megapixel camera on the back has an LED light and can now shoot 1080p HD video (the Droid X shot 720p). The body has gone from black to charcoal in color. The Droid X2 ships with Android 2.2 (Froyo) instead of the expected 2.3 (Gingerbread), but expect the upgrade to be available shortly after the phone is available.

Motorola Droid X2 front and back view for boomers

There’s the option for a mobile hotspot, so you can connect up to 5 devices to the web. The bad news is that it’s only a 3G phone. It’s on Verizon, so the absence of 4G is a shame. Where there’s no coverage yet, there will be and where there is coverage, it is a multitude of times faster than 3G. The phone is CDMA-only, so you will have to use it on Verizon in the U.S. It doesn’t have the additional radio support to work as a world phone.

Missing from the original Droid X is a dedicated camera button. Though the screen buttons are ok and the lack of a physical button makes the phone more sleek and elegant, the dedicated button is definitely easier to use. You can easily miss the screen button. Physical home, return, search and app buttons on the front offer an easy-to-feel, tactile way to know when you’ve pushed the right button to navigate home, etc.

Droid X2 will cost $199 with a new two-year customer agreement.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G3 16 MP Micro Four-Thirds Interchangeable Lens Camera for Boomers

Senior Friendly Features: Easy to Use: ★★★★☆, Features: ★★★★☆ Picture Quality ★★★★½  Size ★★★★★ Battery Life ★★★★☆ Price ★★★★☆

Panasonic’s new LUMIX DMC-G3 camera is one of the new “mirrorless” Micro Four Thirds format cameras. The sensor is smaller than an APS-C sensor (usually 15x24mm) but still much larger than a typical point-and-shoot camera. Bigger sensor generally means lower visual noise (better in low light) and better apparent resolution. This camera still has an impressive 16 megapixels. The included kit lens is 14-42mm (28-84mm in 35mm equivalent). The lens is patterned after legendary Leica optics. There’s even an optional stereoscopic 3D lens.

Other lenses are available, as well. The camera has built-in optical image stabilization, and a dust reduction system that vibrates the sensor to shake off dust.

The intelligent auto setting takes control of the whole camera, picking the perfect settings for everything. You can remove those controls one level at a time or go full manual if you like. There are creative enhancement options, from vivid colors to sepia to changing contrast, sharpness and more. The camera can shoot at 16 Megapixel resolution at up to 4 frames per second or at reduced resolution at up to a lightning-fast 20 frames per second.

The widescreen touch screen LCD is 3 inches diagonal and can swivel and twist to allow easy high- and low-angle shots as well as self-portraits, and even around corners.

The camera also shoots 1080i HD video. That swiveling LCD comes in handy for that as well.

Autofocus is very quick, Panasonic’s engineers came up with a contrast-based focusing system they claim rivals that of a professional SLR. If you prefer manual focus, the screen can automatically offer a 4x zoom in on a subject to make that easy and accurate.

    The Apple Store

It’s Apple’s 10-year anniversary, and rumors are running rampant about what the trendy electronics giant has in store for this historic celebration. Apple celebrates its anniversary every year in its retail stores, so there’s bound to be some fanfare, but the question of “how much?” remains.

Many blogs and Apple fans have speculated that Apple will reinvent its retail outlets, renaming them Apple Store 2.0, and replacing paper signs with text on iPads. There is also some talk that Apple may add a “Startup Session” to its stores – a place where consumers can go if they need help getting their newly purchased products running.

There are also rumors that Apple will mark this anniversary by launching a new gadget, though for the life of us we can’t think of what that would be. Its devices already do so much that we can’t imagine what’s left.

Whatever the celebration entails, we’re sure it will be held in proper Apple style. It will no doubt be the perfect mix of practical convenience and over-the-top coolness. Happy anniversary, Apple!

The digital transition has finally happened. Amazon, maker of the popular Kindle e-reader, has announced that it is now selling more e-books than hardcover or paperback books. Since April 1, the electronic commerce company has sold 105 Kindle e-books for every 100 printed books.

This number is only counting for-purchase books, meaning it doesn’t include e-books that you can download for free. If it did, the number would clearly be much higher in favor of e-books. ComputerWorld notes that Amazon has been selling printed books for the past 15 years, while it only started selling Kindle e-books less than four years ago.

Amazon officials said they knew the day would come when e-books would outsell printed books – they just had no idea how fast that day would get here.

To heck with Facebook and Google, Netflix is apparently the largest consumer of Internet traffic, according to a study published by Sandvine.  The network equipment and software vendor notes that Netflix alone is responsible for 22 percent of all Internet traffic in North America.

That is the largest portion of North American Internet traffic held by any one entity. It also the same amount of traffic that is generated by all the Web browsing and YouTube video watching combined.

During “peak hours” Netflix is able to account for about 30 percent of all Internet traffic. Experts say this is a significant figure because it means consumers are turning to Netflix for their entertainment instead of toward other traditional or non-traditional media.

Experts say it may also send a clear message to other movie and TV show providers that consumers prefer options that are inexpensive and easy to use. Many cable and satellite systems can be easy to use after an initial tutorial, but they can cost you more than $100 a month in some instances.

Many websites that provide pirated movies are free, but downloading them can be a hassle and the quality can be awful. Starting at $8 a month and with thousands of titles to choose from, Netflix provides a happy medium that is both affordable and very easy to use. Plus, you can access your instant queue from many devices ranging from gaming systems to tablets and even smartphones. Seniors, take note!

MSNBC published a great article today by Jacob Bolm that outlined the pros of buying an iPad. It also touched on whether you should purchase an iPad if you already own an iPhone or iPod Touch. Though the article is really written for anyone interested in owning an iPad, we think it’s particularly relevant for seniors.

“Why,” you ask? Well, for one, Bolm’s subheadings are perfect for those not too familiar with the product. He lists some of the features you may enjoy on the iPad, as well as a few of the differences between the iPad and other Apple products.  Bolm breaks the iPad down into easy to understand categories like “Screen Size,” “Speed” and “Portability.”

He’s also got a brief, yet complete list of points you should keep in mind before buying the device. For example, Bolm reminds his readers that, like the iPod, the iPad cannot make actual phone calls, only Facetime calls (we assume he’s talking about the iPad 2 here).

For his great organization and vast understanding of not just the iPad, but what consumers would want to know about the iPad, we wanted to give Mr. Bolm a big High Five. We couldn’t have written it better ourselves…

The Kindle “with Special Offers” is now the best-selling of all Kindle products. This newest model debuted a month ago, and has clearly been popular with readers looking to save a few bucks. The device only costs $114, which is $25 less than the next cheapest model. In exchange for this price cut, however, consumers must contend with ads, special offers and sponsored screensavers.

Prices and offers like these have kept the Kindle a top contender in the e-reader market. Not to mention the fact that Amazon’s Kindle must also compete with high-tech tablets like the iPad 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab. While the Kindle can’t perform as many tasks as these tablets, it’s also priced much lower. The iPad 2 starts at $499, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which just underwent a price cut in April, now goes for $199.

According to an Ericsson survey, nearly one-third of smartphone owners have engaged a non-voice application on their smartphones before they’re even out of bed. We can’t sound too shocked by that number – we do it, too.

Apparently a whopping 35 percent of us Android and iPhone users reach for our smartphones before we reach for just about anything else in the morning. The most popular non-voice apps were the social networking apps. Unsurprisingly, Facebook was listed as the most popular app people turned to in the morning.

“Our research found apps are appealing to people at an emotional level,” Ericsson’s statement said. “Consumers become attached to a certain set of apps that makes them feel more in control of their lives, and turns everyday chores into positive experiences. Apps even give consumers a new sense of freedom; if a new situation arises, there’s probably an app out there that could help them.”

Netflix. It’s been one of the most missed apps when transitioning from an iPhone to an Android. You never know how much that little movie program means until you can’t access it anymore.

Well, Android and Netflix are now trying to do something about this. So far, they’ve been able to debut the Netflix app on a few Android devices, but still have a long way to go if they want to reach the majority of these smartphone owners.

As of yesterday, the Netflix app is now available for the HTC Incredible, HTC Nexus One, HTC Evo 4G and the Samsung Nexus S, according to GottaBeMobile.com. These phones must work off Android OS 2.2 or 2.3.

GottaBeMobile.com also points out that this means Netflix is missing from key Android products like the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Incredible and the HTC Thunderbolt. Netflix issued a statement, however, noting that this is an initial roll out, with more phones set to receive its app in the very near future.

We’ve all seen those annoying tests of the Emergency Broadcast System on our televisions, but can you actually recall a time when an EBS message was not a test? We can’t.

Well, that may change now that the FCC has partnered with the nation’s top telecommunications companies to offer national, regional and local emergency notifications via cell phone or smartphone. The alerts would be sent by text message from government officials warning of major disasters like terrorism attacks, hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes.

These free text messages are only sent when there is a public safety emergency, and they are also only sent to users located within the hazard zone. So far, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have all agreed to participate in this program, which was formally launched today at Ground Zero.

New York and Washington, D.C., are the first cities to test out this new system, though the FCC chairman noted that it will be introduced throughout the U.S. by April 2012.

One of the best benefits of this new system is that citizens will be able to receive emergency information even if the phone lines are jammed. This is because the texts will be sent on a localized basis.

    Queen Elizabeth, Apple fangirl

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect spokesperson than the Queen of England herself, who recently admitted her fondness for the iPad 2 after it was shown to her by her grandsons. According to Britain’s DailyMail, Prince William and Prince Harry initially introduced the Queen to the iPad 2.

Both boys own the device, and took turns showing off what its amazing features to Queen Elizabeth. Soon after, the DailyMail reported that the 85-year-old queen was “so impressed with the touch screen device that she immediately ordered staff to buy her one.”

The paper also noted that William and Harry think it’s “hilarious” how fond their grandmother has become of the device. “They love the fact that their gran wants an iPad and think she’s really cool,” the DailyMail said.

Others close to queen noted that she also appreciated the tablet’s light weight, large screen and intuitive design – we couldn’t write this stuff ourselves if we tried!

This isn’t the Queen’s first Apple gadget, however. She’s owned an iPod since the device was introduced. The DailyMail noted that the Queen updated to a state-of-the-art iPod in 2005 that could hold about 1,500 songs. Pres. Barack Obama also gave the Queen an iPod when he visited London in 2009.

Now, if the 85-year-old Queen of England has the time and patience to let her grandkids show her a new gadget, we hope you seniors will extend the same courtesy to your grandkids – and to the technologies that can make life just that more fun and interesting!

It looks like Google has taken a page from ElderGadget by reconsidering the Android Market’s usability. Okay, maybe we can’t take full credit for the move, but it’s nice to know that other companies – particularly ones as large as Google – care about a user’s experience and convenience, too.

With that in mind, Google is implementing five new features that should make it easier for users to find apps of interest. These features are actually lists aimed to get more apps in front of more people.

The New Top App Charts is a country-specific list of the latest and greatest available apps to date. Lists documenting the newest top paid, top free and top grossing apps will accompany this chart on the Android Market homepage.

Next, is the Top Developers. Google’s blog says this list will consist of the “highest quality, most popular and most notable apps available.” Initially, about 150 developers will be invited into the Top Developers category, which will be denoted by a special icon.

Once you’ve clicked on an app, you’ll now also be greeted with two more sets of recommendations, apps that were viewed by others who also viewed this app, and apps that were installed alongside this app. These categories aim to provide accessories and complementary apps to the one you’re viewing.

There’s also the Trending Apps, which are up-and-comers that are gaining momentum. Google notes that there are currently more than 200,000 apps in the Android Market, which have been downloaded a total of 4.5 billion times. And there’s little doubt that this Internet giant believes these lists will lead to even more downloads.

These new lists are currently displayed on the web version of the Android Market. Google says they will premiere on tablets and smartphones “soon.”

To play Bing Silversphere click here.

Silversphere is a familiar puzzle game that combines strategic thinking and quick reflexes. The game has many elder friendly features that makes the game fun and challenging. The goal of the game is simple – get the silversphere in the blue vortex. The challenge of the game is to use items on the board to maneuver the silversphere over and around obstacles. Additionally you are on a tight time line so even the slightest mistake can be fatal.

Save your password before every level so you can continue from that level the next time you play

Silversphere first opens up with a main menu that lets you start the game from the first level, view instructions or load a previously played level. We recommend reading through the short instructions to find out how to play the game. There are various objects that can help you get to the blue vortex, but there are also objects you will have to avoid. The instructions are clearly written and you can move through them at your own pace*. The instructions come with visuals so they are clear and easy to understand. The text could be a little larger and it is overlaid on top of some graphics so it isn’t as easy to see as we would like.

Use the boxes to cross the water to the blue vortex

One thing that is a little odd about the game controls is that some menu ‘buttons’ appear as text without any graphic to let you know that you can click the text. We generally like black text, but when everything – including a button or menu – is only black text then the visual cues are lost. Luckily there aren’t many buttons to use so we still consider the game easy to use.

The game music is a little harsh, but it turns off during gameplay. The sound effects are more obvious because there is no music during each level so they were very easy to hear.

Push the box into the claw to reveal the blue vortex (your destination).

At the beginning of each level you will be given a password that you will want to write down or save somewhere. When you come back to the game’s main screen you can continue from your last level by entering the password you took down.

Periodically you will have to watch an approximately 30 second advertisement between levels.

    Try Silversphere.

*Note to game designers: allowing users to move through your game instructions at their own pace is always better than a timing-based system.

HTC Freestyle Android Smartphone for Boomers

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD Screen: ★★★☆☆ Sound Quality: ★★★★½ Easy to Feel Controls: ★★★☆☆ Easy to See Controls: ★★★★☆ Simplicity: ★★★½☆ Durable Design ★★★★☆

HTC has put the quality of their phones into a really small form factor at a really great price. The Freestyle has a 3.2 inch screen that’s actually pretty easy to read, despite being a fairly small phone. The icons are large enough for most everyone to be able to read and understand easily. It has built-in GPS with turn-by-turn instructions, it plays music in stereo even over Bluetooth and a 3.2 megapixel camera/camcorder. The talk time is really good, at around 7 hours. There’s a MicroSD slot to allow up to 32GB of extra storage.

The operating system is Qualcomm’s Brew OS, and HTC has put their “Sense” skin over it. HTC Sense is on all their phones, I use it on my HTC phone and love it. It adds some nice interface touches and keeps it simple and elegant.

In addition to Bluetooth, the phone also has 3G connectivity for internet including browsing and social networks. The price is right, on Amazon it’s a penny, with no data plan required.

The new flexible, paper-thin smartphone display

Utilizing the same technology as the Amazon Kindle, researchers at Queens University have created a flexible e-ink display that could be controlled through manipulation. The Paper Phone, as it’s been coined, premiered at the Computer Human Interaction conference where visitors could see just how thin future smartphone displays could be.

The Paper Phone is no thicker than a few pieces of paper. Instead of touching the screen, users can bend the corners of the “page” to execute commands. Some experts say this could be the end of physical computer desktop displays, since these e-ink displays could be laid directly on a surface – such as a real desktop.

Despite the popularity of Android’s smartphones, Apple’s 8 GB iPhone 3GS is outselling them all. Yes, that’s right, the iPhone that is two years old is out-selling Android’s latest and greatest.

And just why is it so popular? Experts say it’s Apple’s top-notch reputation and the low price point. AT&T is selling the iPhone 3GS for just $49 with a two-year contract.

The iPhone 3GS isn’t the only Apple phone outdoing Android. The 10-month-old iPhone 4 is the best-selling device on both Verizon and AT&T.

It’s no secret that ElderGadget is a big fan of the iPhone – though we love many Android models, such as the Motorola Atrix and the HTC Thunderbolt as well. However, when it comes to senior-friendliness the iPhone’s intuitiveness puts it on top for us, too.

You can play Candystand Mini-Golf by clicking here.

When Flash games on the internet really started to take off, one of the most popular games online was mini-golf. It’s the perfect game to play with a mouse because it’s easy to use (not many controls required), easy to understand (the rules are pretty universal) and it’s just plain fun. Plus, the creative possibilities are endless. Candystand was one of the first companies to have a hugely popular mini-golf game and the classic version is still available on their website today.

    Don't fall in the lava.

It’s been well over a decade since the days of dial-up modems and VGA monitors and it’s obvious that games and game graphics have come a long way. Candystand has put out a sequel that we’re reviewing for senior friendliness today.

When you open the game you will be shown a short advertisement before you can get started. Once the game has loaded, pick from one to four players to play at a time on the same computer. (I would be lying if I said that we never used four-player mini-golf to pass the time at work when no one was looking). You can start on training mode if you want to test out any of the 18 holes or you can practice on the front nine or back nine. Once you are comfortable with the game, you can go a full 18 holes.

The ball can roll over some of these obstacles and can't roll over others.

As we mentioned before, the game is very Easy to Understand – so easy that there are no instructions provided when starting the game. Just like in real golf, the goal is to get the ball in the hole in as few tries as possible. The controls are extremely Easy to Use: click the mouse to set the ball down, aim with the cursor and finally press and hold the cursor to determine your putt strength.

The game graphics are quite impressive and fun for such a simple game. Candystand has gotten quite creative with their game environments, but this is where the game becomes not very Easy to See. The ball is very small and the hole is sometimes hard to find. There are a lot of moving parts on the various greens and they sometimes add to the confusion because you don’t know where to hit the ball. The most difficult part is figuring out if you are putting downhill or uphill. It would be nice if they had added some markers to indicate the direction of the slope. We consider this game Easy to Hear because there is only some light game music and the sound effects sound just like you are playing a round of mini-golf with the family.

    Beware of the bridge.

The fact that you can play with multiple friends increases the Cool Factor of this tame. It’s also challenging enough to keep you coming back to improve your score.

Tip: get familiar with each green before you try and keep track of your score. Just like in real golf, this game can be frustrating so try not to lose your cool!

Bonus Tip: On hole 15, hit the ball to the red dot in front of the hockey player.

I had 11 strokes on my worst hole (hole 10) the first time around. What about you guys? Try it here.

A new website hopes to pair food and social networking. It’s called GrubWithUs and its goal is to bring strangers living in the same town together for a meal.

Here’s how it works: a local restaurant offers a pre-fixed menu for a certain price at GrubWithUs.com. You purchase that meal, and then show up to the restaurant where you will be seated in a group of six to 12 people.

You can sign up for GrubWithUs through Facebook or Twitter, which should make it easy to stay in touch with fellow diners after the meal has ended. So far, GrubWithUs is available in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Chicago.

GrubWithUs could be a great way for seniors to make new friends. It could be particularly helpful if you’ve recently moved to a new town or if you’re traveling solo to a big city.

Engineers at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, South Korea, have found a way to convert sound into electricity. Enough electricity, in fact, to perhaps one day power your cell phone.

Researchers have found that 100 decibels of sound, which is about as loud as a jackhammer, traffic on a busy freeway or a shout, can be converted to about 50 millivolts of electricity.

While this isn’t quite enough to power a cell phone, the fact that these researchers can successfully convert sound into electricity means the potential is there. As this technology further develops over the years cell phone users may be able to charge their phones anytime and anywhere a high level of noise is present.

Stuck in traffic? Roll down your window and let the sweet sound of angry commuters juice up your phone. At a concert? Your cell phone can recharge as you hold it up like a modern-day lighter.

Experts say you could even power your phone by yelling at it – though we’re not sure the added stares would be worth the extra charge.

Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device for Seniors

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD Screen: ★★★★☆ Battery life: ★★★★★ Light Weight: [5] Easy to Read Text: [5] Easy to See Controls: ★★★½☆ Easy to Use: ★★★★☆ Easy to Set Up: ★★★★★ Simplicity: ★★★★½

Amazon’s Kindle 3 is simply the best ereader out there. We did a comparison between the major ereader players HERE, including the Barnes and Noble Nook and even the iPad, and the Kindle comes out on top.

The newest Kindle offers everything the previous models did, including e-ink for maximum readability and clarity, massively long battery life (up to a month if you keep the wireless off most of the time), light weight and it’s very easy to use to read books, listen to music (and audiobooks), read blogs and even read newspapers from around the world. Amazon has made the size of the Kindle smaller while retaining the same 7-inch screen. It also improved its e-ink Pearl technology to make it up to 50% clearer and easier to read. It can also read to you, albeit in a robotic voice with little inflection, great for when you’re also doing something else or if your eyesight is an issue. There are many selectable font sizes that make it readable for most seniors.

The Kindle 3 is available in a 3G (Free global 3G plus Wi-Fi) model for $189, a Wi-Fi-only version for $139, one with advertising and special offers built-in (Wi-Fi-only) for $114 or the Kindle DX, with a huge 9.7″ LCD and free global 3G and Wi-Fi for $379.

U.S. Carriers lock tethering apps out of Android MarketAT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have asked Google to prevent their users from being able to access tethering apps. Those carriers want subscribers to have to pay their rates for using their smartphones for wireless or wired internet access. The apps will still be available online, but they are blocked from users of those carriers on the Android Market. The workaround is to go to the developer’s site, but you’ll have to do a web search for that. You won’t find searchable descriptions or ratings on the market.

AT&T has been sending out warning emails to their smartphone subscribers to ensure that they pay for use of their phones for internet access for other devices, like laptops.T-Mobile charges an additional $15 per month in the U.S. for using up to 5GB of data. Verizon wants an extra $20 on top of it’s already pricey $30 per month for data up to 2GB.

If you’re already watching your retirement money, it may be worth the extra effort to learn to download these apps outside of the Market.

All new iphone 4 in white for Boomers

Apple just announced an all new iPhone. No, it’s not the iPhone 5 (yet), it’s the iPhone 4 in beautiful white. In addition to allowing you to stand out from the crowd with the first ever white iPhone, it’s easier to find if you set it down. Black phones are harder to find on couches (and behind the cushions), etc. Unless you have an all white house.

The white iPhone 4 has all the same features of the original, black one. Same “Retina Display” that is absolutely crisp and clear and easy to see. Same iOS interface that is intuitive and easy. Same 16- or 32GB storage capacity. Same 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, and a front-facing camera for Facetime video chats. Same easy syncing with iTunes and Mobile Me. The only real difference besides the color is that it is a hair (or two, at 0.2mm) thicker.

The white iPhone 4 is currently available on Verizon and AT&T.

nikon d5100 18-55mm kit lens for Seniors

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD Screen: ★★★★☆ Easy to Feel Controls: ★★★★½ Easy to See Controls: ★★★★½ Easy to Use: ★★★☆☆ Easy to Set Up: ★★★½☆ Simplicity: ★★½☆☆ Durable Design ★★★☆☆

Nikon’s new D5100 offers incredible features, picture quality, resolution and performance for around $900, with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AFS VR lens. The APS-C-sized sensor has a very impressive 16.2 megapixel resolution, it also shoots 1080p HD video with full autofocus, something most other HDSLRs don’t do.

The LCD on the back is fully articulated, so in live view mode it can swivel and tilt to make shooting easy from any angle. Also handy to flip out and around for those fun self-portraits at arm’s length.

Nikon D5100 Articulated LCD Screen for Boomers

The kit lens is a good all-around choice, and uses silent wave motors for extremely fast autofocus, as well as Nikon’s legendary VR (Vibration Reduction) technology to keep your images sharp when handholding the camera in low light, etc. You can also use any other lens Nikon makes, allowing you to grow with your skills and needs. If you already have other Nikon lenses, you can get the D5100 body only (without lens) for $100 less.

For an amateur SLR, this thing has impressive specs, including shooting at full resolution at up to 4 frames per second. You can shoot in jpeg or 14-bit raw format, and the in-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing and low light performance is impressive for a camera at any price.

It’s very light compared to many other similar bodies. This is largely thanks to all the plastic in the construction. This isn’t a camera to be banged around or put in harsh situations, but as a great beginner DSLR camera, it is an excellent choice.

  • 3-inch, 921,000-dot Super-Density horizontal type Vari-Angle LCD Monitor
  • In-camera Special Effects Mode

  • Stunning Full 1080p HD Movies with Full Time Autofocus

    Hasbro's My3D Goggles

Nintendo has some competition in the 3D gaming realm. The toymaker Hasbro has entered the arena with a pair of 3D goggles that can turn a fourth-generation iPhone or iPod into an immersive 3D gaming system.

The set looks like an updated version of the View-Master, except instead of a colorful slideshow you’re greeted with a 3D gaming world. You simply insert your iPhone or iPod into the back of the goggles. The game is controlled by turning the device left or right. You can also tap on the iPhone’s or iPod’s screen to control the settings.

My3D Goggles costs $35. There are currently seven games apps available for it, including Bubble Bolt, Sector 17, Sharks,  Teleport LA, Tunnel Pilot, Shatterstorm and 360 Sharks.

Barnes & Noble released a huge update for its Nook e-reader today. It has upgraded its operating system to Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, and is now able to support Adobe Flash Player. The Nook also now offers full email, about 125 apps, and interactive, full-color books and magazines.

A new Nook Friends app makes the e-reader even more like a tablet by allowing users to share, recommend and comment on books in a social networking setting. It also sports an LCD screen instead of the traditional e-ink display, which many e-readers use.

The e-ink display is easier on the eyes when you’re reading, but isn’t as quick to load and cannot fully support colors. The Nook also has a lower price tag than most tablets. It starts at $249.

Tony Donaldson takes a look at the new HTC Thunderbolt smartphone running on Verizon’s rapidly expanding 4G/LTE network. The 4.3-inch 800×480 pixel display is stunning and very easy to read, and the native clock on the home screen is readable from almost any distance. The 4G data connection is a blazing fast one comparable to most high speed home internet connections. It run’s HTC’s Sense user interface over the easy-to-use and versatile Android operating system and can use all of Android’s great apps. The 1 GHz processor means everything on the phone happens quickly.

The front-facing camera works for video chatting, and the rear-facing camera shoots HD video and 8 megapixel stills. The focus can be set on any part of the screen, making it very easy to use, it’s very clear even in lower light, and responsive enough to catch your kids or grandkids in action.

It’s not the lightest phone or certainly not the smallest, but some of us like having a phone that is substantial with solid build quality and it’s well worth it for the screen size, features and speed.

If you’re looking for a smartphone that’s easy to use, easy to see, easy to hear and easy to understand, not to mention fast and having a real cool factor, the HTC Thunderbolt is a good choice. .

Improve the battery life in your HTC Thunderbolt 4G Smartphone

After using the phone for a little over a week, I discovered what most other Thunderbolt users have: the HTC Thunderbolt has poor battery life. The included 1400 mAH battery isn’t what this phone needs. I went to bed one night with the phone alarm set to wake me up in the morning. The battery was fully charged. I woke up late, the phone battery was completely dead.

If you’re like me and you don’t like getting only 4 hours out of a battery, here’s the way to do it.

You have to turn off the 4G. I know, I know. But it’s easy enough to do, you just have to know how to do it, then you can turn on 4G when you really need it. HTC and Verizon didn’t make it a simple setting, it requires going into the test menu.

Don’t be afraid, you won’t screw up your phone or void your warranty. Instead, you’ll have a useful tool to toggle 4G/3G and make your battery last up to 4 times as long.

    1. Open up the phone dialer

    2. Type “*#*#4636#*#*”. You won’t have to hit send, this will take you instantly to the test menu.

    3. Click on Phone Information at the top

    4. Scroll down to the bottom of that screen. Click on the area that says “CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto”.

    5. Change that to “CDMA auto (PRL)” which sets you in 3G

    6. Go back to your main screen and you’re done.

If you are ready to be in 4G mode, reverse the steps and change it back to “CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto”

Verizon has been excitedly promoting the Thunderbolt as their first 4G phone. I spoke with a couple of Verizon reps today, and they said that battery life will improve when there are more 4G towers. If you’ve ever been on a fringe area, you know that your phone trying to connect to a weak signal will drain your battery, no matter what phone, in short order.

There is an app to easily toggle 4G on and off, called LTE OnOFF, by Cunning Logic. Some users have reported issues with their phones when using it, though that’s information gleaned from reading reviews, so I can’t confirm the accuracy. I’m a fan of simple fixes, not using a one-trick pony app for everything I do. Doing this yourself takes a few seconds and takes up no space on your phone, no potential issues, and you feel like a power user when you do it. And when your jealous friends go out and get their Thunderbolts (or you want to strike up a conversation with someone else who has one), you can show them this tip and you’ll really feel like you know your phone.

And as with any Android smartphone, there are all kinds of apps going on in the background. If you’re not using them, turn them off. In this instance I will recommend the same app that Verizon recommends. Advanced Task Killer. It’s a free app on the Android Market, and you can selectively turn off all the apps you’re not using. Facebook, Maps, etc. all use battery to run. It may not be a lot, but it all adds up. If you aren’t using the GPS to get to where you are going, turn off Maps. The app itself is very easy to use.

    Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc ElderGadget.com

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD Screen: ★★★★★ Lightweight: ★★★★★ Sound Quality: ★★★★★ Easy to Feel Controls: ★★★½☆ Easy to See Controls: ★★★★★ Simplicity: ★★★★☆ Durable Design ★★★★☆

We first saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc at CES this year. It is a very thin, lightweight Android smartphone, with a curved back for easy holding (hence the name “Arc”). The screen is a very large 4.2 inches diagonally, and it has a slightly better than WVGA resolution of 854×480, which is beautiful to look at and easy to read. The large size is even enough for e-books via the Kindle or Nook apps, and it’s not a bad screen to play Angry Birds on, either. Sony has their Bravia technology in the phone, optimizing the display just as it does for their HDTV sets.

It’s a GSM phone, and in the U.S. it’s available through AT&T, and the first phone to run Gingerbread (Android 2.3). Between the new version of Android and Sony/Ericsson’s own tweaks, it’s easy to use and elegant.

The phone is really amazingly thin compared to any other smartphone with a screen this large. It’s 8.7mm thick, or about 1/3 of an inch. It fits in your hand comfortably, and the light weight will allow you to hold it easily for long periods of time. Of course, it has the latest in Bluetooth technology, so you can not only pair your favorite Bluetooth headset with it, you can stream music from the phone to any Bluetooth-enabled speaker set.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Side View eldergadget.com

There’s a mini HDMI port on the side so you can connect it to your HDTV directly, giving you a VERY easy to see version of your phone’s display.

Build quality on this phone is excellent, as you’d expect from the Ericsson side with their expertise in building quality phones. Sound quality was good and clear on calls.

The 8.1 megapixel camera on the back can also shoot 720p HD video. It uses Sony’s Exmor R technology, giving it good low light performance, but the camera over-compresses and over-smooths the photos and videos. Though they look good on the phone, you may be disappointed seeing how mushy they look on your HDTV. For stills, sometimes lower megapixels are better, especially when it comes to overall quality. I know the marketing people want the specs to be amazing, but making up for it on the back end with low quality output is just awful. There’s no LED lights (which some people call a “flash”) for the camera, which can be a useful feature.

Speaking of specs, on paper it seems like it has some older technology. Many of the higher-end smartphones sport dual-core processors. The Arc’s single-core, 1GHz processor has no issues, here. The phone is responsive and actually snappy. Though it has 1 GB of internal storage, only about 1/3 of that is available for apps or other user items. There is a microSD slot, so there’s a possibility of up to 32GB of extra addable storage.

It is a 3G, not 4G phone, possibly because putting a 4G radio would have made it significantly thicker. The phone has a nice balance of features and surely the light weight and thin size are helped by this. There’s no fat, yet still plenty of extras and all the real features you need.

Overall, it is an elegant, well-designed phone with plenty of speed and power, with a big, bright, easy-to-see 4.2-inch screen and a handset that’s clear. The thin, light design feels great in your hand and is easy to hold onto for long talks, movies, etc.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound 8 speakers for iPad for Boomers

The sound is amazing and crisp, very easy to hear and in the case of radio, podcasts or other spoken word media, it’s very easy to understand the speaker. There is a USB connection on the back to connect other types of media players, e.g. Android phones or your computer.

The simple button on the front allows you to control sound, change tracks, etc. There’s also a wireless remote, either way it’s very easy to use.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound 8 iPad Black for Seniors

ElderGadget founder Elie Gindi had a chance to compare and contrast two new smartphones at CES 2011 in Las Vegas, the HTC Evo and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. Both smartphones sport similar screen size dimensions. The HTC Evo has a 4.3-inch, 800×480 LCD display, whereas the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has a 4.2-inch, 854×480 LCD display. Both feature 8 megapixel rear-facing cameras, though the HTC Evo has an additional 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera whereas the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has none.

As for which is the most senior friendly? Besides the omission of a front-facing camera, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is thinner and lighter, making it an easier phone to hold onto. And although both smartphones run on the Android operating system, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc runs on the new, improved Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It also has a much better battery life than the HTC Evo.

If you’re looking for a smartphone that’s easy to use, easy to see, easy to hear and easy to understand, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc gets our vote, though the HTC Evo isn’t a bad choice, either.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it would be changing its Kindle policy on library e-book borrowing. Amazon will work with OverDrive, the company that provides most ebooks to libraries, to make its device compatible with the current lending system.

As it stands now, only the Nook by Barnes & Noble and Sony’s Reader can take advantage of e-lending. However, Kindle owns two-thirds of the e-reader market, according to the Wall Street Journal, which would make this new policy a big deal for both Kindle owners and libraries. Amazon has not yet said when e-lending will be available on the Kindle.

E-lending works very similar to regular book lending, in that only one person can rent out a copy of a book at a time. Despite there being no physical book, once an e-book copy is rented out the library must purchase another copy if it wants to rent that same title out a second time. Lending periods are determined by the libraries, but tend to run between two and three weeks.

One group that is generally none too happy with these new e-lending policies is the publishing world. Many experts believe the e-lending trend has the potential to dramatically affect sales. Simon & Schuster and Macmillan, two of the country’s largest publishing houses, have yet to allow e-book lending on their titles.

Another major publisher, HarperCollins, recently revised its e-lending policy. It now requires libraries to purchase a new copy of its e-books after a title has been checked out 26 times. What do you think? Could e-lending revolutionize the way libraries operate? Will all the major publishers eventually jump on board?

HTC Thunderbolt 4G Android Smart Phone for Boomers

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD Screen: ★★★★★ Easy to Feel Controls: ★★★★☆ Easy to See Controls: ★★★★½ Simplicity: ★★★½☆ Durable Design ★★★★☆

I’ve spent the past week with the new Thunderbolt from HTC. It may well be the best Android phone on the market.

The HTC Thunderbolt is HTC’s newest 4G phone and the first 4G/LTE phone on Verizon. You can’t miss this phone, it’s not small in any way. It’s all plastic on the outside, in a large form factor to handle the screen and all the other great features. It’s a little on the heavy side, but that heft feels good when you hold it. It feels solid and actually harder to drop because of this. It borrows from the designs of HTC’s other phones, e.g. the EVO.

It’s a big phone, but for a good reason. The 4.3-inch screen is the biggest you can get on the market today, and it’s stunning. Easy to see, easy to read everything on it. The Kindle app is actually useful on the Thunderbolt, you can easily read on it. Pictures are very big, clear and crisp. The WVGA resolution of 480×800 looks great.

Movies and YouTube content are fantastic on this phone. Crisp and clear. The kickstand on the back pops out to hold up your phone to make watching easy. The speaker is behind the kickstand, and with the stand out, it’s quite loud and clear.

    HTC Thunderbolt Kickstand Detail

There are two cameras on the Thunderbolt. The rear-facing camera has an 8 megapixel sensor and two LED lights beside it. I won’t call them a “Flash”, because they don’t really flash, they light up briefly when needed. It also shoots 720p video. Currently there’s a problem with shooting video on this camera. The video itself is clean and nice, but the audio is VERY quiet. The problem is in the noise cancellation feature, it cancels ALL of the sound. There is supposedly a fix on the way.

HTC Thunderbolt 4G Android Smartphone Rear Camera and LED Light

The front-facing camera can be used for video chatting. Verizon, Skype and HTC are working on this, so far I haven’t found anything that works with that camera, making it now only useful for self-portraits for the web. Verizon hyped this feature when the phone was announced, but Skype wasn’t bundled with the phone so perhaps it isn’t quite ready yet.

HTC Thunderbolt 4G Android Smartphone Front-facing Camera Detail

There are a few physical buttons on the outside of the phone. The on/off switch at the top is fairly recessed but is where you’d expect it. Volume controls are a rocker on the side, which is almost flush and very mushy and don’t give you much response, so you often have to look at the screen while you actuate the rocker to see what it’s doing.

HTC Thunderbolt 4G Android Smartphone Volume Rocker Switch

The phone part of the Thunderbolt works well. The buttons on screen are big and easy to read, sound quality with the regular handset or via speaker phone is good and loud. It works well with wired or Bluetooth headsets for hands-free talking. There are some good antennas in this phone, as I have yet to drop a call (knock on wood) even in some areas of Los Angeles where I’ve dropped calls before.

Texting works well, the keyboard is larger than most because of the big screen. I love voice texting, it’s fast and pretty accurate. The one complaint I have is that it doesn’t automatically capitalize the first letter of sentences this way, yet it does when you type. Auto Correct is aggressive so you have to keep your eye on what you’re typing, lest you end up having your text featured on DamnYouAutoCorrect.com (a site which largely features iPhone’s over-aggressive auto corrections and is definitely not safe for work). There are arrow keys along the bottom to assist you in your own corrections if you need to go back.

If you use your phone for a watch/clock, the stock home screen is great for this.

HTC Thunderbolt 4G Smartphone Main Screen for Seniors

HTC has their “Sense” user interface skinned over the underlying Android operating system. Currently, the HTC is running Froyo, or Android 2.2, with Android 2.3 coming out sometime soon (aka Gingerbread). As with most others, this will happen over the air when available.

Startup time is around a minute from when you first power it on. There is a setting that allows for an instant boot, which actually doesn’t ever shut the phone all the way down, it just puts it to sleep. HTC warns that this can cause problems with some software, but doesn’t go into detail on which apps it might affect.

Unlike some of the newer, high-end phones, this phone doesn’t have a dual-core processor. But the 1GHz Snapdragon processor in the Thunderbolt is no slouch, I didn’t find myself waiting for anything, the phone is very responsive, even with all kinds of things going on at once.

The Thunderbolt comes preloaded with apps. A lot of them, all of Verizon’s choosing. Some are useful, like the Kindle App, the flashlight app that makes use of the LEDs on the back of the camera, FM Radio receiver, the typical ones like Clock, Calendar and Calculator. But then there are trial versions of things to get you to sign up for services. There’s one for Blockbuster Video, one for Bitbop (similar to Hulu Plus), a trial game called “Let’s Golf 2” that lets you play two holes before requiring you to buy, and a shortcut icon to order Rock Band. These are a scant few of the many installed on the Thunderbolt that you cannot remove. Really annoying.

Then there are the apps that I had to install to make this phone useful. I installed Edwin for even more voice control of my phone (I use voice control and voice typing for a lot of my phone, including text and email), PF Voicemail Plus (which is cheaper than Visual Voicemail and alerts me via email if I miss a call when my phone is off/restarting/out of area), Skype (more on this in a minute), Talking Tom to amuse my daughter, Xpert Timer to time my writing projects, Tone Picker so I can use MP3 ringtones and alerts and a friend suggested WhatsApp, a social app. I also added Twitter’s official app and TweetCaster to manage a couple of twitter accounts and Battery Doctor to manage battery use and charging. I have the Facebook app, but I use the browser more often since it offers more features. It’s really nice to have a phone that will view the NON-mobile versions of websites, even ones with Flash content.

There are a couple of features in the Thunderbolt that are temporary. One is an app called City ID, which puts up the city and state where a call originates from. I’ve found that surprisingly useful when I have a call come in from somewhere I don’t recognize, sometimes just the city name gives me an idea of who is calling. There is mobile hotspot capability built in. It’s free until March 15, 2011, after which time it will require a $20 a month subscription. I think this is excessive to charge to someone who already has an unlimited plan. They’re probably hedging their bets against people sharing the hotspot with friends, and since you can use up to 5 devices at a time with that mobile hot spot, I’m sure that will happen some.

Some people will want to use the hot spot feature no matter what, however. The 4G speeds are truly incredible. In a couple of tests in 4G coverage areas, I’ve gotten 13 Mbps downloads, and that’s testing with my MacBook Pro using the Thunderbolt for my internet connection. I’ve heard of people getting even better speeds, upwards of 20 Mbps. That’s better than some people have at home.

So far 4G is only available in major metropolitan areas, but Verizon is adding more 4G/LTE towers and coverage all the time. If you have an iPad or other tablet that uses Wi-Fi (whether it has 3G or not), it can be just as fast as if it had 4G without having to buy a new device for that.

The phone is blazing fast and has a big screen. If it has one true Achilles heel it has to be the battery life. Because of the performance and HTC’s choice to only put in a 1400 mAH battery, in normal to heavy use you’ll get around 4-5 hours max with a battery. And as hard as the back is to pry off, swapping for a charged spare batter isn’t a good option. Turning off 4G isn’t possible, or at least that I could find. Turning off other features, like GPS and Wi-Fi, when you’re not using them does help a bit. Keep chargers near.

Overall the features, speed and large screen make this a great phone for power users. If you want one device to do almost everything, this may just be it. This is now my personal smartphone.

She can store up to 3,500 books on this model, and can continue to read the New York Times for free while others must abide by the new paywall system or have their access limited.

    6. Sony Cyber-shot Digital Camera TX9

This Sony camera takes the concept of 3D to a whole new level. With the TX9, Mom can shoot 3D photos in both low light and panoramic modes. Photos of grandchildren will look more realistic than ever before, while panoramic landscapes will make her think she’s peaking through a window instead of through the 3.5-inch LCD display.

The touchscreen TX9 isn’t just 3D-enabled, it’s a smart camera. It can detect and react to blinking, smiling and shaky hands, ensuring that Mom’s photos come out looking as nice as she intends them to. The TX9 can also soften skin, making wrinkles appear less noticeable and defocus the background so the subject is the star.

    9. iPod Nano

This is Apple’s sixth generation of the iPod, if you can believe it. The newest model still comes in 8 GB and 16 GB, but its physical size has been cut in half. It’s basically all screen now. The iPod’s small stature and built-in clip are handy for moms on the move. Whether she’s working out with the Kinect or at the gym or just running a few errands around town, this iPod can provide up to 24 hours of music on one charge.

The iPod can play music from iTunes, the radio or it can employ Genius to create a customized playlist. A built-in pedometer is also included, making it a great workout buddy. This iPod also comes with a few of the accessibility features Apple has become famous for. Mono audio will let her hear both channels in either ear if she has trouble hearing, while VoiceOver can read the text under Mom’s finger. She can also create a crisper screen for herself by turning on the white-on-black display, which provides a higher contrast. These visual helpers can be especially useful considering the iPod’s 1.54-inch screen.

    10. Venturer KLV39150 15” Under Cabinet LCD TV

If Mom spends a lot of time cooking or entertaining in the kitchen, then an under-cabinet TV may be the one accessory missing in her heavily stocked culinary arsenal. The Venturer unit contains a 15.4-inch under-cabinet LCD TV with a built-in DVD player and radio. The TV flips down when it’s in use, and aligns itself along the bottom of the DVD player, which is positioned underneath a cabinet, when it’s not.

The Venturer comes with a magnetic remote that easily sticks to the fridge, making it difficult for Mom to lose it among the chaos of cooking. The unit also contains a clock and timer, so she can keep an eye on her food and her favorite programs. The commands are easy to understand and the buttons are relatively easy to see. Therefore, this model should work for most moms who are still active in the kitchen.

Motorola Xoom Eldergadget Review Main Image For Boomers

Senior Friendly Features: Large LCD ★★★★½ Easy to See: ★★★★★ Easy to Use: ★★★★☆ Easy to Set Up ★★★★☆ Speed: ★★★★★ Web Browsing: ★★★★½ Build Quality: ★★★★★ Lightweight: ★★★☆☆

I had a chance to really sit down and use the Motorola Xoom. It’s a mix of great, good and okay. At least long as you don’t compare it to the iPad.

The first thing you notice is the weight. It’s a little on the heavy side at a little over a pound and a half. It certainly feels solid, and the construction gives you confidence that this thing is well built. It has a sharp, metallic feel. Not a cut-your-fingers kind of sharp, just a good edge all the way around. A rubber bumper cover can make it easier to hold if a little bulkier. It’s strange how it looks and feels a little better without the bumper, but it’s a little slick, so the bumper gives you more confidence when using it.

Using several Android devices, you get used to certain buttons being in certain places. I actually had to have someone show me where the power button was. Motorola decided that instead of along an edge, it should be on the back. From an ergonomic standpoint, this makes it easier to find and hit, it’s right by your finger when you hold it. But it’s non-standard, so it takes some getting used to. Reminds me of the first time I drove a Saab. I got in and my friend took great delight at watching me scour the inside of the car, looking for where to put the ignition key. Saab engineers decided to put it next to the parking brake lever for ergonomic reasons. Perhaps, but when you’re used to a button or key slot being in a relatively standard area, it isn’t as intuitive as it could be.

Motorola Xoom Rear Controls for Seniors

There is a cluster on the back, with the power button, one of the two stereo speakers, rear-facing 5 megapixel camera/720p video lens and the LED light. It’s all pretty convenient and nicely laid out. Available covers/bumpers have a cutout area so this area is uncovered.

That rear-facing camera is pretty cool for one thing – imagine using a video camera where the viewfinder is a whopping 10.1 inches diagonally. Nothing easier to see than that, and it works well in even bright sunlight. If you do like to shoot video, you will love the Xoom for this.

The front-facing camera is a 2-megapixel webcam. By the time you read this, there may and may not be a way to use this. Skype and other video chat apps are so far not working with the camera, just for text chatting. Flash isn’t officially supported yet, either, but that should come in soon.

The camera issue and lack of Flash are growing pains for the tablet’s operating system, Android 3.0, codenamed Honeycomb. The Xoom is the very first tablet to run the OS, which was designed specifically to be THE Android OS for the new generation of Android tablets. Between that and the dual-core Tegra 2 processor, the Xoom is quick and responsive. There are a lot of nice touches on the user interface, including the hemispherical, iconic search of open web pages or other types of media that is a little faster and easier than Apple’s “Coverflow”.

Browsing the web in general is fast, and connectivity comes in via 3G or Wi-Fi (up to 802.11n, the fastest currently available). On the big screen it’s very crisp, clear and easy to read. The bezel around the screen is smaller than that of the iPad, which I think makes the Xoom a little cleaner and does also make it slightly smaller.

Instead of having the typical Android hard buttons for home, back, etc., they’re on the screen at the lower left corner. It makes it easier to use since you don’t have to try to hit them in the places where they’re optimized for portrait when you’re in landscape mode.

There are a couple of ports built into the side, one Micro USB for charging and connecting, and one mini HDMI to connect to your HDTV, making viewing even easier as well as allowing you to play HD movies from your Xoom on your TV.
